Song review: For Cryin’ Out Loud! by Finneas

Confessions of a musician’s life: the two sides of the coin

For Cryin’ Out Loud! depicts the trials and tribulations of a tensed relationship, trying to navigate the doubts and fears for each other.

Throughout the record, Finneas expresses his frustration and confusion, with the hardships of the lifestyle of a musician: “been stuck in elevators, in airports and empty rooms, waiting for you”, trying to figure out what their partner searches and feels (“you’re heart is a maze”). We can find the same feeling of nostalgia and heartbreak in Finneas’ production and writing, with some shifts: when most of his songs included MAO and some acoustic elements (piano and guitar mostly). We also have the inclusion of horns (trombone, trumpet and saxophones) and a more rock and retro atmosphere, compared to the dark-pop elements in older records (e.g. I Lost a Friend, The Kids Are All Dying, Love Is Pain).

Through this rock inspired production, Finneas shares his exhaustion in confronting his partner: “with a kiss on my cheek and a bruise underneath”, with the cycle of disappointment and anguish repeating itself. Yet, he is determined to understand why this cycle won’t break: “why don’t you show me why you so worried” and expresses that even if they both go through the roller-coaster of being in a complicated situation, and the dissatisfaction that comes with it at times, they still care for each other: “you’re wearing me out, but I love you the same”.

But even if For Cryin’ Out Loud! explores the life of an artist going through touring and having to sacrifice time with their loved ones, it also talks, in an implicit way, about the repercussions it has on others and the hard task to find a way out.

This new single announces Finneas’ second album studio, out on October 4th, 2024.
