Virtual Insanity, released in 1996, describes the danger of our use of electronics and the possible dependence of the virtuality it offers us.
With its captivating rhythm, we are transported into the thrill of the world of electronics, with all its possibilities and dangers. In the lyrics, we can sense the irony of humans creating their own demise by trying to help themselves.
Jamiroquai insists on this point, reminding us of our greed: “Cause we can always take, but never give”, forgetting about the essential things in life: “Always seem to be governed by this love we have for useless, twisting of their new technology”, making us focus on unrealistic aspects and fantaisies.
This ensue a rift in our society, with more power to those immersed in that virtual world, but at the same time, in a contradictory way, they become prisoners of this untouchable reality: “now there is no sound, for we all live underground”. By focusing on what electronics can give us in terms of money and power, we forget all the possibilities for the greater good, and stay confined into one dimension.
Jamiroquai presents us a cautionary tale, one to reflect on, and to be inspired by.
