Song review: Smoke by Ari Lennox

A warning against deceit: the R&B/Soul record of the year

The R’n’B star is back with her new single Smoke, announcing a third album in 2025.
In this track, Lennox takes us back into the 60s and 70s with a Motown inspired instrumental and vocal technique.

From the start, we understand how unapologetic the singer is towards her relationship, declaring that she wants “all the smoke”. Throughout the song, she warns her lover to not cross the line (“f*** around and found out”) and disrespect her. She is not afraid of defending herself and leaving if needed: “it could blow up […] try Jesus, but you better not try me”. The track is also full of humor with the lyrics ”my therapist done moved outta state”, a caution to her love interest, to not play with her sentiments. Lennox’s vocals are superb, embodying the lyrics with precision and ease. The production by Bongo ByTheWay is a vintage sensation, making us wish to hear more.
