Song review: My Essence by Awa Ly

The celebration of womanhood

The essence of life

Awa Ly is back with My Essence, a new single co-written with Nicolas Repac (composer, producer, and musician). In this track, the singer explores her roots and her journey from childhood to womanhood.

The lyrics, “Anchored into Earth, I’m still while loving my rebirth,” convey a deep sense of reconnection with oneself. The instrumental, blending influences from jazz, soul, folk, and Afro sounds, creates a rich soundscape that stays true to Awa Ly’s artistry. The French horns, present throughout most of the track, add a classical touch and serve as a metaphor for the battles she has fought to reclaim her essence: “I’m standing still.”

A true celebration of life and womanhood, the song expresses the freedom she has found within herself and her sense of self-worth: “My true Self, Me.” She is one with nature and the world, merging with them as she liberates herself from past burdens.

My Essence is a song that explores feelings of liberation and human value with finesse and complexity — a track to reflect and meditate on.
