Single review: I Just Might by Bruno Mars

The beginning of a new era after nearly a decade of absence

I Just Might: a light-hearted record that lives up to the expectations?

Bruno Mars is making his comeback to the scene, with his new single I Just Might from his upcoming album The Romantic.

After nearly decade, the star is delivering his first solo track, exploring the 70s’ pop-disco/soul with a touch of modernity.

Sprinkled with Mars’ well-known humour, I Just Might is a romantic song, with the musician speaking directly to his love interest. Throughout the track, Bruno Mars expresses his admiration for his lover and his hope that she dances “as good as she is look right now”. Unfortunately, the lyrics are too repetitive, and makes us feel like there is no real progression.

The production created by D’Mile and Bruno Mars, is a smooth instrumental, finding his roots from Silk Sonic‘s work. Full of groove, I Just Might presents a polished sound, that is maybe too perfect, as its musicality feels bland compared to previous works such as Leave the Door Open (2021) and 24K Magic (2017).

I Just Might is bringing back the fun-pop of the 2010s, with its light-hearted atmosphere and infectious rhythm. Still, it makes us wish more musically from the master Bruno Mars.

For the beginning of a new musical era, I Just Might is a very safe record for Bruno Mars, making his return feel bittersweet.
